Martin Jackson
(1871-1955)




Martin Jackson, a painter, was born in Newburgh, New York on April 12, 1871. Jackson studied art at the Cooper Union and National Academy of Design in New York City, followed by study in Paris, London, Brussels, and Antwerp. He was a resident of Denver prior to settling in Los Angeles in 1906. A versatile artist, he did stained glass work, costume design, and illuminations. Primarily a portraitist, he also painted landscapes and marines. Jackson died in Los Angeles on July 10, 1955.

Member: Los Angeles Art League (first president, 1923); California Art Club (charter member).

Exhibited: San Francisco Art Association, 1917; Artists Fiesta, Los Angeles, 1931.

Awards: Silver medals, Alaska-Yukon Exposition, Seattle, 1909; medal and diploma, 10th Olympiad, Los Angeles, 1932.

Works held: Amherst College; Reading Public Museum, Pennsylvania.
